PROVO — A 31-year-old man was arrested and booked into jail Thursday on rape charges after a niece reported to police he repeatedly threatened her with witchcraft, then forced her to have sex with him.

The woman, now 20, said she had been sent to live with her uncle in Provo in April 2003 when she was 15 years old, according to an affidavit of probable cause filed in 4th District Court.

While living there, the woman told police her uncle told her she had a demon inside her and he had to "initiate" her, then forced her to have sex with him.

He told her she had to "participate in an initiation ceremony," which also led to sex, according to the affidavit.

She said she was frightened by his threats of witchcraft, according to the affidavit. The woman also said the abuse happened at his home or in the mountains after he made her drink tequila.

The victim said the last time it happened was when she was 16 1/2 and her uncle forced her to have sex, then told her he was sorry and that "this time wasn't for witchcraft."

The man was booked into the Utah County Jail for investigation of numerous instances of rape on a $20,000 cash-only bond. He will be in court again July 10 at 8:30 a.m.
