SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Police say they rescued 181 dogs, cats and birds from a farm in southern Puerto Rico where they were found sick and undernourished in dirty cages.

Ponce police officer Lourdes Ortiz says a couple and their two sons were arrested and will be charged with mistreating animals.

Ortiz said Thursday that six dogs will likely be euthanized because they were too sick to be nursed back to health. The remaining animals have been sent to nearby shelters.

Puerto Rico has been criticized for its lax enforcement of animal protection laws after an animal control company was accused last year of throwing scores of pet cats and dogs to their deaths from a bridge.
