Salt Lake police Sunday arrested three men who officers say attempted to steal a large amount of copper wiring from a store.
The men tried to steal copper wiring from Home Depot, 328 W. 2100 South, by hiding the merchandise inside a vanity cabinet they tried to purchase.
Adan Zavala was caught by store employees trying to shoplift approximately $1,200 worth of copper wiring. Two other men ran away from the store, according to police.
Pascual Martin Torres was stopped a short distance away. Investigators found 132 rolls of copper wiring worth about $8,400 in his vehicle, according to a Salt Lake County Jail report. He removed all 132 theft detection devices from each roll he tried to steal, the report stated.
Another man, Jair Florez, was arrested at a nearby TRAX station, also after allegedly stealing about $8,400 worth of copper wiring. He, too, allegedly removed 132 theft-detection devices from 132 rolls.
Florez and Torres were booked into jail for investigation of more than 130 counts of theft.
