Salt Lake police Sunday arrested three men whom officers say attempted to steal a large amount of copper wiring from a store.
The men tried to steal copper wiring from Home Depot, 328 W. 2100 South, by hiding the merchandise inside a vanity cabinet they tried to purchase.
Adan Zavala was caught by store employees trying to shoplift approximately $1,200 worth of copper wiring. Two other men ran away from the store, according to police.
Pascual Martin Torres was stopped a short distance away. Investigators found 132 rolls of copper wiring worth about $8,400 in his vehicle, according to a Salt Lake County Jail report. He removed all 132 theft detection devices from each roll he tried to steal, the report stated.
Another man, Jair Florez, was arrested at a nearby TRAX station, also after stealing about $8,400 worth of copper wiring. He, too, removed 132 theft detection devices from 132 rolls.
Both Florez and Torres were booked into jail for investigation of more than 130 counts of theft.
