Karin Mayo loves her Pittsford neighbors but worried about hosting a neighborhood cookout for fear that someone would bring wine or beer. She is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which instructs its members to avoid alcohol.

"So I said on the invitations that we'd provide the drinks," Mayo recalls. But one neighbor, unaware of Karin and Rob Mayo's religious beliefs, brought a bottle of wine as a gift. "I opened it and told people to help themselves and enjoy," she says. "We don't drink, but it was absolutely fine."
