Four children playing on a beached personal watercraft at Pineview Reservoir Sunday afternoon escaped virtually unscathed when the craft exploded and launched them into the air.
Weber County Sheriff Lt. Kevin Burns said witnesses told sheriff's deputies that the children were sitting on the craft when it inexplicably exploded, sending all four about 10 feet into the air. At least one of them, a 7-year-old girl, landed in the water and was pulled out by a nearby boater.
Burns said two of the children, a 5-year-old girl and the 7-year-old girl who landed in the water, were transported to an Ogden hospital with minor injuries, but the other two, a 6-year-old girl and 11-year-old boy, were uninjured.
Burns said the four Salt Lake County children were all related and taking part in a family picnic at Cemetery Point. The watercraft was not running at the time of the incident and Burns said family members told deputies that earlier in the day they had used starting fluid to start the craft that exploded. Burns speculated that fumes from the fluid may have ignited, causing the explosion, but no clear-cut cause had been determined.
