Kenneth Merena's attempt to break the land speed record for an open cockpit motorcycle ended in frustration Sunday after mechanical breakdowns and rough roads thwarted the effort. Merena, from Draper, hit a bump in the frontage road along I-80 in Tooele County at more than 215 mph and was sent airborne on one of his attempts. After several hours of fixing mechanical failures, Merena ran out of time amid the scorching heat and had only a blown engine to show for it.
