OREM Utah Valley State College is celebrating its official transition to university status today with an all-day party.
Free entertainment, including fire-knife, Tahitian dancers and musical performances, will be going on throughout the afternoon at the "UVUphoria" celebration. Children and adults can also take mini-classes and mix with artists and authors from 1 to 5:30 p.m.
UVSC's new library, which is scheduled to open in July, will be open for tours between 1 and 6:30 p.m. The five-story, $48 million building boasts more than 100 public computers, media viewing rooms and a cafe.
Country stars Josh Gracin, Collin Raye and Joe Nichols will headline a 7 p.m. concert at the Brent Brown Ballpark. The concert, which is sold out, will be followed by fireworks, which should begin around 10 p.m.
To accommodate event traffic, College Drive will be closed between UVSC's roundabout at the intersection of University Parkway and Sandhill Road. The McKay Events Center will be closed from 4 to 7:30 p.m.
Those entering campus through the roundabout can drive east around campus to access free event parking. Because of construction on University Parkway, those coming to UVSC from the north should take the Orem Center Street exit and drive south on 1200 West.
