South Salt Lake police are searching for a man who walked into the TransWest Credit Union Friday afternoon, forced those inside to the floor at gunpoint, demanded cash and fled the building.
Police spokesman Gary Keller said witnesses described the robber as an African American male of average build, between 5-foot-8 and 6 feet, wearing white shorts, a white shirt and a white "wrap" around his face. They told police they saw him jump a fence at an apartment complex adjacent to the credit union at 39 W. 2100 South and drive away in a black Jeep Cherokee.
Keller said the vehicle did not have license plates, but a temporary tag with the expiration date of 7-14-08 was visible in the rear window. The vehicle was last seen heading south.
Keller asked that anyone with information contact South Salt Lake police at 840-4000 but warned that no one should approach the robber, who is considered armed and dangerous.
