A jury heard opening statements Tuesday in the trial of Jesus A. Jimenez, charged in the robbery and murder of a Glendale hairstylist on Aug. 15, 2007.
Jimenez, 23, is charged with murder and aggravated robbery, both first-degree felonies stemming from the shooting death of 24-year-old Faviola Hernandez during a robbery at The Shop beauty salon at 1329 W. California Ave.
Police say Hernandez was cutting a customer's hair when a man entered the salon, announced the robbery and insisted on getting money. Hernandez died from a single gunshot wound to the chest.
Court documents state that Jimenez told another individual that he was the getaway-car driver, while Miguel Mateos-Martinez, 20, actually fired the gun. Mateos-Martinez is still at large.
Last May, prosecutors tried to negotiate a plea with with Jimenez but were unable to come to a resolution.
