A blown substation caused minor power outages and stopped TRAX lines briefly at the start of Monday evening's commute.

Police blocked off several blocks downtown at about 4:30 p.m. after a witness reported hearing an explosion and seeing a manhole cover shoot a few feet into the air, said Salt Lake police detective Rick Wall.

The explosion happened when some underground power lines touched a pool of water near 400 South and 200 East, Wall said. TRAX lines were shut down while police investigated, but were reopened at about 5 p.m.

Officials expected some sporadic outages throughout downtown Monday night, Wall said.

The ZCMI food court was among the businesses affected.
