I don't think Tyler Thomas (Readers' Forum, June 19) understood my point. In saying that fears of socialism are outdated, I did not in any way intend to endorse a road to socialism. Socialism is an unequivocally bad way to organize a country.

What I meant is that nobody — whose opinion matters — advocates socialism as a real option. Such people are no longer taken seriously.

There are reasons to believe Barack Obama is not the ideal presidential candidate, but the argument that an Obama presidency would put us on the road to socialist ruin is not credible. It would be more helpful to discuss real issues rather than wasting energy slaying the dead Marxist dragons.
