WASHINGTON — D.C. United defender Gonzalo Martinez scored the game-winning goal in the 55th minute as United went on to beat the San Jose Earthquakes 2-1 on Sunday.

Four minutes after an Earthquakes equalizer, Martinez received the ball from midfielder Marcelo Gallardo and rocketed it off the far post and in. The assist was one of two for Gallardo on the day.

The win was the fourth in five games for United (6-7-1) which is one win away from pulling even after a 2-7 start. Meanwhile, San Jose (3-8-2) remains in last place in the Western Conference.
