A local outdoor outfitter is donating $4,000 to an environmental cause and their customers get to decide who gets the money.
Patagonia, 2292 S. Highland Drive, invites its customers to participate in its "Our Voice Your Choice" campaign to vote on their favorite environmental cause. Voting goes until July 19.
Utah Backcountry Volunteers, Utah Rivers Council, Wasatch Community Gardens, Heal Utah and Utah Clean Energy are the five local groups that are nominated to receive the grant. The groups were chosen by Patagonia because of their local focus and and the range of environmental concerns.
"'Our Voice Your Choice' program has two purposes: helping local organizations continue the important work of restoring and protecting the local environment and raising public awareness about the various environmental projects taking place in the community," said Maureen Kent, store manager. "There are so many worthy recipients that we're asking the local community's help in selecting the honoree."
Patagonia has given $31 million since 1985 through its Environmental Grants Program, which gives 1 percent of annual sales to environmental organizations worldwide. It also is committed to the environment: It uses organic cotton to avoid environmental damage from toxic chemicals, uses fleece made from recycled plastic soda bottles, recycles used garments to use for new fibers and encourages sustainability, as well as other programs.
Those interested in voting can drop in at the store. No purchase is necessary. For more information, call 801-466-2226.
