An early morning joyride in a stolen car has landed a group of young teens in trouble with Salt Lake police.

A Salt Lake officer was checking out a report of a reckless driver Wednesday morning when the car in question ran a stop sign. The driver refused to pull over. A short time later, however, he crashed into a fence near 1250 West and 400 South, said Salt Lake police detective Jeff Bedard. Five teens got out of the car and ran.

Two girls, both 14, were stopped about a block away, Bedard said. They said the driver and two others picked them up.

Several blocks away from the accident, a 13-year-old believed to be the driver of the vehicle was arrested while trying to jump over a fence to get away, Bedard said. The teen was booked into juvenile detention for investigation of being in possession of a stolen vehicle and fleeing.

The two 14-year-olds were released to their parents. The search continued Wednesday for the remaining two passengers.
