SANDY — A young girl was in critical condition after being hit by a car while she was riding her bike Wednesday night.

The 12-year-old girl was riding her bicycle with her sister when the accident happened just before 8 p.m., said Sandy Police Sgt. Victor Quezada.

The girls ran a stop sign near 12180 S. Pine Ridge Drive (1190 East), and the victim was hit by a westbound car, Quezada said. The car missed the sister, police said.

The 12-year-old hit the front panel of the car and was thrown from her bicycle. She was not wearing a helmet, Quezada said. She suffered serious head injuries and was bleeding internally.

The girl was flown to Primary Children's Medical Center.

No citations were issued, as police determined the driver was not at fault.
