BEAVER (AP) — State and federal wildlife officials want the message to be clear: Utah forests are bear country, so be aware and be prepared.

Officials have launched a new bear safety awareness campaign, replacing small placards at campgrounds and kiosks with large, bright yellow posters, caution signs and instructions bolted to picnic tables.

Last summer, an 11-year-old Utah County boy was attacked and killed while camping in American Fork Canyon. It was Utah's first documented fatal bear attack.

Federal officials won't say the attack prompted the new safety campaign.

State officials this year increased the number of bear hunting tags to 299. Officials cited the attack and an increase in bear nuisance reports as reasons for an increase.
