To prevent the potential importation of Japanese beetles, 100,000 square feet of sod grass bound for the Real Salt Lake soccer stadium will be inspected by state officials before it is escorted to the field.
The sod is being shipped from Fort Morgan, Colo., where the closest-known infestation of Japanese beetles is 50 miles away near the Denver airport.
The Utah Department of Agriculture and Food said this is a precautionary measure to ensure that no more beetles enter the state. Orem is in the midst of an infestation, and the UDAF doesn't want the beetles' presence in Utah to spread.
Japanese beetles are considered destructive because of their eating habits.
