The Utah State Prison has hung out a "Help Wanted" sign.

Prison spokeswoman Angie Welling says the Department of Corrections has about 100 open positions and wants to get them filled. That number is down from more than 160 open positions earlier this year.

Welling says the department has struggled to hang onto staff. Many have left for higher pay with other law enforcement agencies or in other industries. Recruiting also got tougher after correctional officers Stephen Anderson was fatally shot by an escaped inmate last year.

Corrections officials hope a $3 million infusion of cash from state lawmakers for salary increases will help. Welling says starting pay for correctional officers is now just over $16 per hour.
