PROVO A Brigham Young University English professor was recently honored as the first-place winner of a national poetry contest and was also named Professor of the Year by faculty and students in his program.
Trent Hickman won first place in the adult division of the Borders Open-Door Poetry Contest. His poem describing a Picasso painting was selected from 2,600 entries.
Mark Strand, a Pulitzer Prize-winner, former Poet Laureate and judge of the contest, called the poem "elegant" and "lively."
He was also selected as the American Studies Professor of the Year for his teaching excellence and service to the program. His teaching, research and publications focus on 20th century American literature and culture, with a particular specialization in U. S.-Latino literature.
