I was interested in Jeffery R. Wilbur's letter that not all are right for a mission (Readers' Forum, June 7). He is right that the status of "RM" (returned missionary) has little or no impact on whether someone is a good man. What a mission does is teach someone how to forget himself or herself, to serve others and learn discipline.

I think if every young man at the age of 19 could go to another place for two years, do nothing but serve others and try to make lives better, he would be more ready for adulthood, develop a great work ethic, learn to appreciate what he has and learn to accept others' differences.

Yes, "RM" means nothing, but it is the great qualities they learn to help them the rest of their lives that are invaluable.
