University Health Care is notifying patients that tapes containing as many as 2.2 million billing records have been stolen while they were being transported to a vault.

An estimated 1.3 million of those records, which go back 16 years, may contain sensitive identifying information.

University of Utah officials and the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office, which is investigating the theft, plan to hold a news conference at 12:45 p.m. today to discuss measures that are being taken to find the missing data tapes and protect patients from potential misuse of the information.
