A 41-year-old Herriman man was killed in an accidental shooting in Rush Valley on Saturday night.

Around 9 p.m., a group of men were examining a .45-caliber Springfield model 1911 handgun when one of the men accidentally fired the weapon, striking the victim in the back, said Tooele County sheriff's Sgt. Jason Sparks.

"He checked to see if it was loaded and didn't see one in the chamber, but he didn't realize the magazine was actually loaded," Sparks said. "When he pulled back the slide, it loaded a round into the chamber. Then he attempted to drop the hammer with his thumb and it slipped and went off."

Police have not released the names of anyone involved in the shooting. The case is being screened by the Tooele County Attorney's Office, Sparks said.
