A 44-year-old Salt Lake woman was charged with felony aggravated arson in 3rd District Court Friday in connection with a fire at a Salt Lake apartment on May 21.

The court filing indicates the woman, a resident of the duplex at 1320 E. 4200 South where the fire occurred, told Unified Fire Authority investigator Rex Nelson that she started her mattress on fire with a barbecue lighter in an attempt to kill herself. Nelson's investigation confirmed that the fire was not accidental and was started on a mattress in an upstairs bedroom at the residence.

The property, owned by the Salt Lake County Housing Authority, sustained approximately $75,000 in fire-related damage. No one was injured in the blaze.
