As a community, we are faced with many battles that we must fight together. One of those battles that we all need to band together to conquer is cancer.

It is apparent by the thousands of participants and volunteers that joined together on May 10 for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure that cancer, specifically breast cancer, has a huge impact on this community. There is another event about to occur that focuses on all cancers. This event is the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.

As chairman of the planning committee for this year's Relay for Life of Salt Lake City, I want to extend an invitation to the community to join us at this event. The relay will be today and Saturday. A special survivor dinner will be held today at 5 p.m., then we will kick off the event at 6 p.m. We will camp, walk, run, remember, celebrate and fight back until 10 a.m. on Sunday at This Is the Place Heritage Park.

Now is the time for individuals, families, organizations, schools, religious groups, corporations and small businesses to build a team and join our fight to reduce the burden of all cancers across America.

If anyone is interested in attending the survivor dinner, please contact Melissa Uribe at the American Cancer Society (801-483-1500, ext. 106).
