During this presidential campaign there have been countless promises made that can't be kept and much soothing talk about hope, change and reform. However, it is all disingenuous.

While promising us expansive programs like universal, affordable health care, the candidates have nothing to say about existing entitlement programs, like Social Security and Medicare, that are headed rapidly for insolvency. While the federal government sinks ever deeper into debt, our candidates seduce us with assurances of more benefits.

Can't pay for your reckless mortgage loan? Not to worry — Uncle Sam will bail you out. Don't like the high cost of gas? Our candidates don't challenge our environmental policies on domestic oil drilling, but they do promise summer relief from gas taxes.

In a democracy, the people generally get the leaders they deserve. This does not speak very well of us as a people.
