Rosamond Elementary School's principal is being accused of failing to notify authorities of abuse that led to one of her teachers being convicted and then sentenced to prison.

Late last week, Shelly A. Nordick, 46, was charged in Riverton Justice Court with failure to report abuse, a class B misdemeanor.

Nordick is the principal of Rosamond Elementary School, 12195 S. 1975 W. In November, one of her award-winning teachers, Frank Laine Hall, was sentenced to 15 years-to-life in prison for molesting children in his classroom.

Hall, 37, was a first-grade teacher at the school and former recipient of the Huntsman Award for Excellence in Education. At one point he was charged with 16 counts of first-degree felony child abuse that prosecutors say happened in his classroom between July 1, 2006 and March 9, 2007. Five of those charges were later dismissed in a plea deal.

Nordick, who was serving her first year as principal at Rosamond when Hall was arrested, now faces her own charge of "willfully" failing to report suspected child abuse, according to court documents.

The date of Nordick's non-reporting was listed in court documents as "March 13, 2008." Hall was arrested by police near his house on March 15, 2007.

It was unclear Wednesday if the date on the court documents was a misprint. Nordick's attorney, Blake Ostler, said the charge was in relation to the Hall matter.

"We know they don't have their facts straight at all. The information and the charge are inaccurate," he said. "As a principal, she has numerous responsibilities. A judge isn't one of them."

Ostler said he would reserve the rest of his comments for court. He did not discuss what evidence prosecutors may have for filing the charge.

It was also unknown Wednesday how long prosecutors believe Nordick knew about the abuse and didn't report it.

Riverton City prosecutor Lorenzo Miller said it was his office's policy not to make any comments about an on-going investigation. The Jordan School District said Nordick's status as a principal remains unchanged and it is not conducting an investigation.

Nordick's arraignment is scheduled for June 17 at 8:30 a.m.
