Associate degrees typically take two years to accomplish; however, Salt Lake Community College is kicking off a new program that could put a marketable business degree in the hands of students in as few as 12 months.
SLCC is accepting applications to its new accelerated business program, which provides an associate of science degree to students who otherwise don't have the time to complete the regular two-year course at the college.
"Many who have not earned a college degree are bound by scheduling constraints and face lengthy completion times," said Blair Carruth, dean of SLCC's school of business. "Recognizing this, we've eliminated many of the barriers that keep busy adults from attending college."
Classes for the accelerated program will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at SLCC's Larry H. Miller campus in Sandy. The programs touts full-time instructors and advisers who plan to work with students to make the quickened experience as substantial as any similar two-year program resulting in the same degree.
"The accelerated business program at SLCC is very intense and rigorous," Carruth said. "Students who are willing to make the commitment to this program can get a degree much more quickly."
Geared to students with jobs and families, the courses, which include all the business core classes needed to complete the associate of science degree, will blend classroom and online instruction. The program was recently awarded reaffirmation of accreditation by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs. All of the courses are transferrable to most four-year institutions of higher education.
