A helicopter pilot instructor and his student crashed near the Weber-Box Elder County border this morning when their aircraft lost power.

About 8:45 a.m. a chopper from High Desert Helicopters of Ogden was practicing landings in an area about a half-mile north of the border near South Willard, according to the Box Elder County Sheriff's Office.

A student pilot was attempting to make the landing when the engine lost power. The instructor took control of the helicopter but was unable to recover, the sheriff's office stated.

The helicopter crashed on the rocky hillside below and slid onto its side. The student suffered minor injuries, according to the sheriff's office. The helicopter, valued at approximately $350,000, was considered a total loss.

The FAA was notified of the accident.
