WEST HAVEN, Weber County — West Haven Elementary School students have raised $4,553 for the American Cancer Society in their second annual Hawk Walk.

America First Credit Union donated an additional $1,745 — $5 for each student who walked — for a total contribution of $6,298, which was presented to society officials in a school assembly.

"Hawk Walk" originated last year when America First employee Tammy Gallegos asked her 12 year-old son, Garrett, to walk with her in the Cancer Society's Relay For Life. Garrett said he wanted to walk on behalf of his teacher's son, who had recently been diagnosed with cancer. The teacher was very touched and told Garrett that he could walk on behalf of both of her sons, since her other son had been diagnosed with cancer as well.

When other students at the school learned of the situation, so many wanted to participate that school leaders decided to organize their own walk.
