STILLWATER, Okla. — Jordy Mercer atoned for his pitching woes with his third home run of the game, a shot in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Oklahoma State past TCU 9-8 on Sunday afternoon in an elimination game of the NCAA baseball tournament.

Top-seeded Oklahoma State (44-17) survived a late rally by the Horned Frogs and advanced to play second-seeded Wichita State in Sunday night's championship round. The Cowboys, who lost to Wichita State on Saturday night, would need to beat the Shockers to force an if-necessary game on Monday.

Third-seeded Texas Christian (45-18) rallied from a six-run deficit before falling. The Horned Frogs closed within 8-7 thanks to a five-run eighth inning, keyed by a three-run double by Bryan Kervin off Mercer.

Then Mercer, normally Oklahoma State's closer, gave up a solo home run to Ben Carruthers in the top of the ninth, tying the game at 8. Mercer then returned to shortstop and gave way to Robbie Weinhardt (6-0), who eventually closed the inning with a double play.
