PROVO — Police arrested one person and cited 11 others after a confrontation Wednesday between two groups that was witnessed by a Provo police officer.

The officer was on his way home from work when he noticed a large gathering of people near 550 South and 500 East just after 6 p.m. He stopped to investigate.

The officer found one man in the group had been injured by a possible knife wound, Provo Police Lt. Todd Grossgebauer said.

The injured man was transported to the hospital to receive treatment for a cut to the face sustained in the alleged attack, Todd Grossgebauer said.

Provo officers responding to the scene arrested one man who was booked into Utah County Jail for investigation of aggravated assault, riot and possession of a weapon by a restricted person. Eleven other members of the two groups were cited, including two juveniles who were referred to juvenile court, Grossgebauer said.

Officers learned that the two groups confronted each other Wednesday evening after an ongoing dispute that started Tuesday. Grossgebauer said the incident is under investigation but couldn't say whether it was gang-related.
