Paul Sikora ("Anti-gay arguments spurious," Readers' Forum, May 27) shouldn't need the Bible to understand the dangers of the gay lifestyle. Statistics alone should confirm to any mature adult the necessity of protecting traditional marriage as the foundation of a healthy society. There are currently (worldwide) 30.8 million adults and 2.5 million children infected with the AIDS virus. In 2007, 2.5 million people became infected with AIDS. Some 420,000 children in that year were infected with the virus. In 2007, 2.1 million people died from AIDS. By the end of 2005, there were 15.2 million AIDS orphans worldwide.

Statistics support the Bible's warning as well as that of modern prophets, that the gay lifestyle is a bad mistake. Legislation in favor of gay marriage legitimizes a lifestyle in the minds of gender-confused youths who need a clear message that it is wrong, that it causes misery, that it destroys life, and that it costs billions of medical dollars. We need legislation that promotes and rewards those who choose the lifestyle of marriage between one man and one woman, a lifestyle that has never caused any catastrophic disease.
