As sure as night follows day, the recent California court decision striking down the state's gay marriage ban brought out a spate of anti-gay letters to the editor. The arguments expressed generally fall into two lines of opinion: (1) Gay marriage would tarnish the sacred institution of marriage, and (2) it would promote immoral behavior. As to the first, the California decision only refers to the civil contract of marriage with the state. No church would be forced to accept gay marriage in a religious ceremony. As to immorality, the Bible does condemn homosexuality as an abomination, but it says the same thing about eating shrimp. Unfortunately, throughout history bigots have plucked obscure references from the Bible to drape their bigotry in a cloak of self-righteousness.
