Police say alcohol likely was involved in a fatal accident on westbound I-80 Saturday in Summit County about 20 miles from the Wyoming border.
Chad D. Loftus, 39, of Croydon, was killed about 11:20 a.m. after he attempted to pass a semitruck, drifted into the median and then apparently overcorrected into the path of the semi, according to Utah Highway Patrol.
The 2000 Ford Escort that Loftus was driving struck the driver's side of the semi. Both vehicles slid off the right side of the road, spinning 180 degrees. The semi overturned and landed on top of the Escort, troopers said.
Loftus was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck was flown to University Hospital. His injuries were not life-threatening, troopers said.
The crash is still under investigation, though UHP troopers say there's evidence that alcohol was a factor.
The accident resulted in lane closures on westbound I-80 for several hours.
