An altercation between two men in a car traveling on Redwood Rood Friday erupted into a shooting, a stabbing and a collision.

The driver of the sedan, traveling south, shot the passenger, who responded by stabbing the shooter at least five times, said Salt Lake police detective Jeff Bedard.

The sedan veered into the path of an oncoming mini-van about 6 p.m. Friday and the resulting collision injured the van's driver. The man driving was the only occupant.

Following the accident, the shooter crossed a field west of the scene near 1000 South and attempted to evade police in a gravel pit about 200 yards from the street, Bedard said. Police arrived to find the man who was shot near the sedan, and later apprehended the shooter in the gravel pit. Both men were transported to a local hospital in serious condition.

Bedard said the driver of the van was also taken to a hospital, but he believed his injuries were not serious.

The wife of the van driver was at the scene about an hour after the incident and said she had not spoken to her husband or been apprised of his condition. She declined to give her, or her husband's name, and police have not released the names of any of the three men.

Bedard said police recovered a gun and a knife in the sedan.
