SANDY — Bill Probst defeated Rob Bachman, 2 and 1, to capture the 2008 UGA Senior Match Play Championship Friday at River Oaks Golf Course.

For Probst, who hails from Midway and is a member of the UGA Board of Directors, it was the biggest win of his golfing career.

The match was even after 14 holes, but Probst won the 15th and 16th holes and won the match after halving the 17th hole.

"The turning point in the match came when I was able to pull off that chip shot on 14," Probst said.

After hitting over the two-tiered green at No. 14, Probst hit a high shot over some trees and his ball, after nearly coming to rest on the top tier, trickled down to within eight feet of the hole. It enabled him to tie the hole and keep the match even.

On the 15th hole, Probst chipped to within six inches for a gimme par and won the 16th hole with his best approach shot of the day to about 10 feet of the hole.

Probst defeated Brent Marriott in Friday's semifinals, while Bachman beat Win Young, 4 and 2.

In the net division finals, Hal Hintze never trailed in defeating Randy Darrohn, 2 and 1.
