RIVERDALE — The police chief who accidentally shot himself during a weapons class violated safety policies.

That's the conclusion after an internal investigation at the Riverdale Police Department.

Riverdale Police Chief Dave Hansen shot himself in the leg May 3 while handling a Glock 27 in front of a concealed-weapons permit class.

The report says Hansen removed the ammunition clip from the gun but does not remember reloading it. While trying to disassemble the gun, he pointed it toward the ground and pulled the trigger.

Hansen declined to speak about the report. The bullet hit him in the left calf and exited near his ankle.
