The Mormon Battalion Association to hold Heritage Day June 14

The Mormon Battalion Association will present its annual Heritage Day June 14 at 10 a.m. in the Assembly Hall on Temple Square. The theme is "The Manifest Destiny of the West — 1846-1848."

Music will be provided by the Southern Utah Heritage Choir, and speakers will be Elder Robert S. Wood of the Second Quorum of the Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and Ellis Ivory, chairman of the board of This Is The Place Heritage Park.

Family history classes scheduled

The Family History Library will offer a series of classes on how to do indexing. The classes, to be taught June 7 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., include "How to Do Indexing," "Arbitrating FamilySearch Indexing Batches" and "Indexing Administration." The how-to class will repeat June 13 and 27 at 10 a.m.

Other classes on the library's schedule include a series June 14 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on researching Danish ancestors; June 21 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Scottish research; and June 28 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on the effective use of U.S. census records.

Musical '1856' will be June 16-21

The musical "1856," the story of the Mormon handcart companies' journey to the West, will be staged at Capitol Theatre June 16 to 21.

All performances begin at 7 p.m., with a 2 p.m. matinee on June 21.

Joseph Paur leads the cast of more than 150 in the role of Brigham Young. The musical was written and composed by Cory Ellsworth with Randy Kartchner and Mildred Packard.

Family summer challenge issued

The Family History Library's "Summer of Sleuthing" challenge will allow families to learn how family history can be fun, informative and rewarding.

The challenge will start with a one-hour kickoff event June 28 at 10 a.m. and repeat hourly through 7 p.m. The six-week program will include tasks for all ages to complete each week at home and end with an "awards" ceremony Aug. 9.

Ballam, opera event planned

Musical Extravaganza, featuring Michael Ballam and the Utah Festival Opera Company, will be held June 28 at the Cottonwood High School auditorium. The event, sponsored by the Holladay Region Single Adult Council, starts at 6 p.m. with a reception, the performance is at 7 p.m. Cost is $15. Go to to register.
