Michael Young, a sophomore at Skyline High School, has been selected to receive a $25,000 scholarship from the EnergySolutions Foundation.

Zachary Swenson, a sophomore at Riverton High, will receive a $5,000 scholarship, and Jacob Sorenson, a sophomore at Viewmont High, will receive $2,500. That is in addition to $2,000 scholarships all three will receive for being among exemplary students selected from 120 Utah high schools in the EnergySolutions Foundation scholarship program.

Young, who wants to be a mathematician, placed first in his grade in the 2005 and 2007 Utah State Math contest. Also in 2007, he placed first in Utah on both the American Mathematical Contest 10th- and 12th-grade exams. He studies Mandarin Chinese and created and maintained the Web site for the Chinese Society of Utah.

The EnergySolutions Foundation began the scholarship program in 2006 as a way to promote the study of math, science and engineering.
