OREM — A woman accused of filling her purses with jewelry and cosmetics told the officer she was sorry while being escorted out of the store.

Tuesday evening, loss-prevention personnel at Macy's department store at 537 E. University Parkway in Orem called police to say they had a shoplifter in custody, according to an affidavit of probable cause filed in 4th District Court.

The employees said they had seen the woman lingering around the jewelry counter, and they soon observed her slipping pieces of jewelry, perfume and cosmetics into her two large purses, said Orem Police Lt. Doug Edwards and the court affidavit.

As the woman walked out, employees followed her and asked her about the alleged theft. The woman gave them the bags, and she was brought back into the store, according to the affidavit.

The woman had stolen items worth more than $1,200, according to the affidavit.

The woman refused to speak with the responding Orem officer, but on her way out said, "I don't know what difference it'll make now, but I'm sorry," according to the affidavit.

The woman was booked into the Utah County Jail for investigation of theft and was permanently banned from Macy's, Edwards said.
