Desert Hills administrators announced the hiring of Carl Franke as its new head football coach Thursday.

Franke has been an assistant at Desert Hills the past three years under head coach Jake Nelson, who resigned at the end of the school year. Nelson guided the Thunder to a 22-12 record the past three years and an appearance in last year's 3A state championship game against Hurricane.

Franke has been a teacher in the Washington School District for the past 11 years. Even though he played high school and college football in New York, he graduated from Southern Utah University with his teaching degree in social science.

In a press release statement, Desert Hills administrators said, "We are excited for the positive atmosphere and support coach Franke brings to the entire Thunder Family, and we look forward to the continued growth and success under the direction of coach Franke."
