SALT LAKE CITY — Utah center Jason Washburn insists his eight blocks against Oregon State Saturday was nothing special.

"I was just in the right place at the right time," he said after Monday's practice in the Huntsman Center. "I was just trying to be more aggressive on the defensive end."

Washburn's eight deflections were a career high and the third-highest single-game total in school history. Teammate David Foster, who has been sidelined this season with a foot injury, holds the top two marks with 10 against Weber State in 2009 and nine against Colorado State in 2010.

Washburn was a record-setting shot blocker at Battle Creek Central High School in Michigan. At Utah, though, he said his shot-blocking ability "has all but diminished" with Foster around. Foster is the Utes' career leader with 219 blocks.

"So it felt kind of good to go back to my old ways," Washburn said before noting it's something he needs to continuing doing to help his team.

Getting blocks, he added, is a lot like making your first shot or pulling down your first rebound. It gives you confidence to get another one.

"The feeling is good," Washburn said. "Blocking shots is no different to you psychologically."

LIVING THE DREAM: Former Viewmont High star Blake Wilkinson has gone from walk-on to scholarship player. The true freshman has appeared in 20 games and started seven times.

"I definitely know how lucky I am," said Wilkinson, who acknowledged that it has "meant a ton" to him to be awarded a scholarship this semester. "It's a dream come true for me."

Wilkinson has turned in his papers to serve an LDS Church mission and plans to depart in mid-May. Upon his return, he hopes to return to the Runnin' Utes.

"I would love to come (back) to Utah," Wilkinson said. "And I think they'll want to take me back."
