Engla Hess Thomsen Christensen1912 ~ 2012Engla Christensen, beloved wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, friend..and avid Jazz fan, passed away Jan. 30, 2012, surrounded by loved ones on both sides of the veil. After 99 years of spreading love, service, gratitude, and joy, she returned home to her loving husband, Alvin, and many other loved ones to enjoy a long awaited reunion and well-deserved rest. She was born October 15, 1912, in Silkeborg, Denmark, to Emil and Kristine Thomsen. She and her identical twin sister, Thora, were the fourth and fifth of seven children. Engla was the last surviving member of her family. She was a life-long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had a strong love and testimony of the gospel and her Savior. Engla met Alvin when he was serving an LDS mission in Denmark just prior to World War II. They corresponded through letters for 7 years, as conditions permitted, until the war ended and she was able to come to America. They were married in the Manti Temple on June 3, 1946, after which they made their home on a ranch in Montana's Sun River Valley until 1973. Their four children enjoyed growing up on the beautiful ranch. Alvin and Engla retired to Salt Lake City, where they lived until Alvin's death in 1984. Engla then moved to Taylorsville the following year, where she resided in her home until her death. Engla was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother with boundless energy. Countless people were the recipients of her kindness, generosity, hospitality, and delicious meals and treats. She cheerfully shared her talents of knitting and sewing, and gave away over 100 dolls with hand-knitted clothing or home-sewn outfits. Most of all she loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them. She is survived by her four children: Leroy of Port Orchard, WA; Bonita Buckingham (Chris) of Taylorsville; Lemoine (Barbara) of West Valley City; and Neva Thompson (Larry) of Plains, MT; 20 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; over 50 nieces and nephews; 1 brother-in-law and 2 sisters-in-law; and many friends. Preceded in death by her husband, all her brothers and sisters, 2 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandson.We will miss you and your sweet Danish accent, but your love and testimony will remain in our hearts until we meet again.
