Mitchell, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2012 at St. Mark's Hospital surrounded by family members. He was attended by doctors, nurses and family members as he fought to overcome pneumonia for three weeks. Shirl was the son of Franklin and Vida Mitchell. He also took Latin, and had a lifelong enjoyment of reading, words and writing. After high school Shirl had some experience in welding in the naval shipyards of San Francisco. He also sang professionally in opera choruses in San Francisco. During World War II Shirl was an instrument repair technician for military planes in England. Following the war, he attended the University of Utah where he graduated with a B.A. in philosophy. He sang to help with his educational expenses. While at the U. of U. Shirl met and married Irene Sidwell in 1949 (divorced 34 years later), and they raised six children. Shirl worked on a Master's degree at Berkley. He later worked for the state of Utah in helping veterans obtain employment. Shirl worked for many years as a social worker in Salt Lake County where he felt satisfaction in helping low income people and the elderly. He spent some of his free time working on his philosophical ideas, and completed two volumes of writing. He believed the world could be improved through healthy living principles. Shirl also loved doing activities with his family including swimming, skiing, tennis and hiking. He enjoyed singing in the Utah Opera choruses of Tosca, Aida, and Faust in the mid 1980's. In later years he became active in senior citizen centers where he played bridge three times weekly and led groups in singing Christmas songs. He enjoyed volunteering in leading singing for the patients at Christus St. Joseph Villa nursing home.
