Walter Hugo Canals1930 ~ 2012Walter Hugo Canals, 81, of Charlotte, passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2012. He was born and raised in Uruguay and immigrated to Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1960 with his wife and two children. From very humble beginnings he rose to become a teaching associate at the University of Utah. Since 1966 until his retirement, twenty nine years later, he led a successful career at Bonneville International Corporation, participating in international forums in the field of radio and television broadcasting. For 29 years he was a member of the Board of Directors of the International Association of Broadcasting (IAB). He was a fervent and dedicated advocate of freedom of speech which took him to assemblies around the world. At the time of his retirement in 1994, he was Vice-President of Bonneville Communications. As an immigrant Walter lived the "American Dream" through hard work and professional ethical precepts. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and strived to live his entire life according to its Gospel principles. He was a member of the Providence Ward of Charlotte. His son, Jorge, preceded him in death and they are now together awaiting the sound of the trumpet welcoming the Resurrection. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Renee; his daughter, Martha Kelly and husband, Dennis; five grandchildren, Steven, Christina, Sabrina, Robyn, and Sean and their spouses; and twelve great-grandchildren, the love and joy of his life. He also leaves behind his two dear brothers, Juan J. and Omar, and their families, all residing in Salt Lake City, Utah.Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at the LDS meetinghouse at 10975 South Prescott Dr. (1630 East) Sandy, Utah, with a visitation held from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow the services at the Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 East 10600 South.
