Dale Janney Bain1923 ~ 2012Dale Janney Bain was born July 9, 1923 to Fred A. and Vivian Janney Bain in Salt Lake City. He also lived in Texas and La Jolla, Calif. during his formative years.Attended elementary and junior high at Jackson School. Graduated in 1942 from West High School where he was editor of the school paper.Drafted in the U. S. Army Dec.15, 1943, served stateside for one year and overseas two years in New Guinea and the Philippines.Entered the University of Utah in 1946 on the GI Bill. Graduated in 1949 with a journalism degree, having spent his senior year as editor of the U. of U. Daily Chronicle. Employed at the Deseret News for 40 years as sports writer, copy editor, wire news editor and later as assistant managing editor, retiring in 1988.Organized the Salt Lake Scots Pipe Band in 1962 and spent six years as Pipe Major, the band appearing in numerous Utah parades, programs and competitions.Married Margaret Orme of St. Anthony, Idaho, June 21, 1952. They were married 59 years.He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and found great joy attending hockey games, swim and track meets, baseball and softball games, plays, musical programs and especially soccer games, rooting for his kids and grandkids. He had a loving relationship with the local grandchildren Tyler, Dani and Jamie during pre-school tending days.Did volunteer tutoring with Margaret in the I Can Read Program at Peruvian Park Elementary for several enjoyable years.Dale and Margaret traveled abroad extensively and later found a haven on the Big Island of Hawaii where they spent vacations with family for nearly 10 years.After retirement Dale turned full time to his great love of gardening, reading and walking.Survived by his wife Margaret, daughter Sue (Jim) Robertson, sons Alan O., Bruce O. (Andrea) and the Bain grandchildren Tyler, Dani and Jamie, the Robertson grandchildren Bonnie, Logan, Gavin, Ethan, Rachel and Emma, step-grandchildren Jake, Nick and Reilly, also former daughters-in-law Vickie Bigelow and Connie Bain.At his request, simple graveside services will be held on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 S Highland Dr, SLC, UT.Contributions can be made to Ronald McDonald House.Dale, 88, passed on Thursday January 19, 2012.www.wasatchlawn.com
