Velene (Val) McFadden Chatwin1934 ~ 2012Val Chatwin passed away January 15, 2012 of cancer. Born April 8, 1934 in Flagstaff, Arizona to Parley King and Josephine Blamires. Josephine later married Mitchell McFadden. She had five siblings; Delbert (Janet), Richard (Pam), John (Irene), Anne Marie and Steve (Ann). Attended Brigham Young University where she met and married Ray Jex Chatwin in the Salt Lake Temple; she sewed her own wedding dress. They had seven children; Randy (Jill), Dana Speirs (Gary), John (Carleen), Scott (Debbie), Teri Sorensen (James) and Jeremy. She had 15 Grandchildren and five Great-grandchildren. Val sang with choirs and quartets and loved singing at ZCMI during Christmas time. She also loved "road shows" where she wrote music, script and performed parts. Was a 4-H leader for many years teaching sewing and canning. She served in the LDS Church extensively, as a leader, teacher and counselor in both the Ward and the Stake Primary and YW programs. She did camping and sports with them also playing softball, basketball and volleyball. For many years she was a volunteer worker at the Church Office Building. With Ray they completed two Intercity Missions. She was involved in the Boy Scouts Program as a Cub Leader, Cub Master, and District Round Table Commissioner for 14 years.Taught Pow Wow for 12 years; taught merit badge classes in the evening at different schools. Received the District Award of Merit, Wood Badge, and Council Silver Beaver Awards; and helped four sons earn the Eagle Rank. She was a Master Gardner, loved gardening and learning about the many different plants. Received the MG of the year award; was awarded the Champion Canner at the State Fair in 2008. She served as Supervisor of Agriculture at the County Fair. She has volunteered at the Gale Center in South Jordan for the last five years. The family wishes to express their thanks for all the wonderful people who have been part of her life through callings and through service. She was a great example, mentor, teacher and will be missed by all.Funeral services will be held at the LDS Chapel on 11000 South and 2700 West in South Jordan. The viewing will be Friday, January 20, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m., and Saturday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Funeral services will be Saturday, January 21, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the same building.
