Raymond Melvin Rogers1926 ~ 2012Raymond M. Rogers, our dear husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away on January 16, 2012. Ray was born January 2, 1926 in Salt Lake City to Leon and Florence Rogers. He attended West High School and Brigham Young University where he received his bachelor's degree in Biology. He married Donna Steenblik in 1947 in the Salt Lake Temple and together they raised 9 children. Ray was a good man and a good example to those who knew him well. He loved the outdoors and spent every opportunity he could teaching others about the wonders of nature. An avid bird watcher, he could often be found enjoying the great outdoors with a pair of binoculars and a bird book. His love of Utah and curious nature sent him on a quest to find each of the 6 corners of the state, something for which he was recognized in the Deseret News.He was a hard worker and taught this example to his children. A school teacher for 37 years, he never felt summer was for vacation. He nearly always had a summer job, from being a tour guide at Timpanogas Cave, to operating his own nature tour business. The summers he was not working, he was pursuing post graduate work at Cornell University, UC Berkley and BYU. He loved the gospel and served in several positions of responsibility in the LDS church. He cherished his years of service in the Jordan River Temple. It was such a thrill to him to have a temple come to his beloved Draper, and to know he could see the temple lights from his home.He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Donna. He is also survived by his children, Mel (Marcia), Karen Peterson (Steve), Wendy Lindquist (Kim), Mark, Marianne Skousen (Craig), Dodi Brooks (Chris), Ross (Dana), Russell (Cindi), and Randy (LaVonne) as well as 31 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 20th, 2012 at 11:00 am, at the Draper 17th Ward, 1617 East 12700 South, Draper, UT. Viewings will be held on Thursday, January 19th, from 6:00-8:00pm at Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary, 1950 East 10600 South, Sandy, UT and also on Friday from 10:00-10:45am at the ward prior to the service.
