Joseph Hyrum Van Seters1919 ~ 2012Joseph Hyrum Van Seters passed away 15 January 2012, in St. George, Utah. He was born to Marinus and Eva Adelaar Van Seters on 13 December 1919 in Blackfoot, Idaho. The family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah in 1924, where Joseph attended Granite High School and Utah State University.In 1941, Joseph went on to serve an LDS Mission to the Northern States. He loved his mission and also the Men's Choir comprised of many other missionaries. Joseph met Winifred Hickey while he was on his mission and was married soon after. In 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps where he became a P38 Photo Reconnaissance Pilot in the Pacific Theatre. After World War II ended he worked as a bricklayer with his father and went on to be a brick contractor, building houses, schools, churches etc. Joseph taught young missionaries how to lay brick; he never stopped being a missionary. As a hobby he wrote music and was very good at it. Joseph started Cottonwood Music and Recording Company. After a back injury he sold real estate and started his own company Arrow Realtors. After 30 years of marriage and six children Joseph and Winifred divorced. He later married Joan Butler Parr who had there children. Due to illness Joseph studied herbal medicine with Dr. John R. Christopher. In 1979, Joseph and Joan moved to Leeds, Utah. Joseph continued to study herbal medicine using herbs for his health. He was so successful he and his wife started the company Grandma's Herbs. He put together over 40 herbal combinations that thousands of people still enjoy today.In 1990, they moved to St. George, where he wrote an herbal column for the newspaper called Herbs and Old Time Remedies. Joseph also wrote and published two books "The Lord Is My Shepherd" and "Herbs and Old Time Remedies". He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Joan Butler Van Seters; daughters, Karen (Ed) Hodgson, Brook (Terry) Mercer, Valorie (Jim) Gillespie, Kelly Miller; sons, Chad (Susan) Van Seters, Matthew Van Seters, Kevin (Tracey) Parr and Mathew Parr; 26 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; and sister, Dawn (Stan) Harvey. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Winifred Van Seters; daughter, Josie Conlon; granddaughter, Teasa Van Seters; grandson, Ryan Cooper; and son-in-law, Ed Hodgson.Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 19, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at the Spilsbury Mortuary Chapel, 110 S. Bluff St., St. George. There will be a viewing Thursday, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to services at the Mortuary. Military Honors will follow at the Mortuary.
